Major Project 002: Development Log.
Major Project 002: Development Log Research and Context Post Industrial Wilderness During this project, my main inspiration is in the exploration of “Post Industrial Wilderness”. A term used to describe old and abandoned industrial scenes, and the relationship between the ruined and the reclaimed. It is one that details the re-growth of nature, mixed with evidence of urban life. This led me to learn about Jesse Oak Taylor PhD, an English Professor who inspired me to focus on The Anthropocene and its byproducts in nature. J.Oak states: “My research focuses on industrialization and empire in the nineteenth century and their relevance for tracing the emergence of the Anthropocene, a proposed designation within the Geologic Time Scale (GTS) acknowledging human disruption of the Earth System.” I want to make a short film that uses poetry, and impactful animated typography to explore the themes of human disruption, post industrial wilderness, and the environmental impact of people. Post Industrial Style Scenery In Holme On Spalding Moore Photographed By Me. Michael Garrigan, author and poet, has a deeply moving article on Post Industrial Wilderness. He details his journey of a walk, in which he talks on the concept of our disregard for the environment. He writes: “It is easy to fetishize untouched wilderness—distant places where we might connect with something sublime, something larger than ourselves. But while we turn our gaze away, we ignore what we stand on until, inevitably, attention is drawn to what we already have. M. Garrigan (2021) I found this description to be beautiful and poetic, and I wanted to bring awareness to this issue with impactful typography in my video, while showing the prettiness of nature and things being left alone. Entrance To All Saints Church Showing Weathering On Wood. Photographed By Me. Poetry Videos I was also inspired by a short film called “Does That Make Me A Woman?”, written by poet Bec Evans. “Evans captures the harshness of feminine expectations, and the lasting imprint of outdated gender roles and stereotypes. Working with a crew made up of predominantly women, the piece was developed as part of a 360 degree campaign, partnering with charity organization Women & Health.” Nowness (2024) It can be seen that my project register and format has a place in addressing social issues, and even in advertising campaigns for charities, and therefore the demographic will be targeted towards environmentalists and poetry lovers. Conceptual Development One of my inspirations for the visuals of this project includes Naughty Dog’s game, The Last Of Us. I was also interested in the sets of the live action series also. 3D Renders Created By Naughty Dog Team Member Alex Harrington And Team All Saints Church Yard Photographed By Me. Ivy Growing Around Metal Bars Photographed By Me. Ivy Growing Around Old Tree Photographed By Me. T.Hogg (2025) DNEG Reconstructs a Nature-Reclaimed Seattle for ‘The Last of Us’ Season 2 Johnathan Wateridge Another inspiration in the conceptual development of my project includes my favourite artist, Jonathan Warteridge. The paintings that captivate me the most are of his “crash series”, detailed by Alice de Roquemaurel of Christie’s: “Jungle Scene with Plane Wreck presents us with a dramatic image of an apocalyptic world. Painted in 2007, the mesmerising work is the last of his seven critically acclaimed theatrical and large-scale ‘crash series’ which depict crashed planes and ships rusting away in fictional landscapes.” A.Roquemaurel (2012) Painter Jonathan Wateridge’s. “Crash series” includes him using materials to make tiny dioramas that he paints. He describes his work as: “Fiction, fabrication, role-play, identity, genre and the idea of ‘construction’ within an image, on both a symbolic and material level,” (J. Wateridge quoted in P. Ellis (ed.), Newspeak: British Art Now, exh. cat., Saatchi Gallery, London 2009-2010) I kept revisiting the notion of wanting to use construction via my hand written typography, to scan it in, rearrange it, animate it, to communicate an important message using visuals. Experimenting and Prototyping I experimented with graphite pencil and felt tip on card to have as much texture as possible in the type to give it a rough, rugged, apocalyptic type feel. The entire process was very time consuming as I wrote the poem in a block by hand. I then took photos, opened them in illustrator, traced the images and expanded them, before deleting artifacts and all the shapes inside letters with holes. I had to start figuring out the best way to group the text, and then moved it around to how I wanted it for the video. Effects During practicing animation, I tried a lot of different effects in after effects, many of which I couldn’t get to function how I wanted during the beginning stages of my project. I had to learn about using adjustment layers to apply effects to, and then linking that animation, effect, or transition to the background shot, and adjusting the keyframes on these to make them work. For feedback I asked my mum and my friend to look at the video. My mum said that some of the scenes were going too fast and she couldn’t read the type, so I had to slow a lot of them down, and enlarge the text before really getting into making the video properly. My friend gave me lots of helpful feedback, including suggesting adding a drop shadow to some of the type to help with the lack of contrast against black type and green backgrounds. Informed Design Decisions and Direction “In the realm of UI/UX design, prioritizing accessibility is crucial. Among the many aspects of accessibility, text, and font significantly contribute to inclusive design.” Silu (2024) Font and Accessibility. Medium It was important to make the typography a decent size so that it can be read more easily after the final render. I also planned to do a voice over to help make the design more accessible. In addition to this, I wanted to limit any sort of extreme… Continue reading Major Project 002: Development Log.

001 Presentation Of Proposal
001: Presentation Of Proposal Task 1 Dan Brady (2017) Medium. Jamie Read God Save The Queen. One design from the post war period which evidences design for good and societal impact includes the God save the queen single cover for the iconic punk band, The Sex Pistols. It is considered by some to be “the most iconic punk image of all time” designed by Jamie Reid; a graphic designer who broke the “notions of order and polish in design.” Benjamin Hiorns (2025) Designed in 1977 this piece was made: “during the height of the punk music scene and in the year of the Queen’s silver jubilee, making it a very topical and controversial piece.” The iconic image of the queen, here, taking a backseat in her own likeness, behind typography reminiscent of the torn newspaper of a ransom note. This, combined with the visual notion of “The tearing away of the Queen’s features” , is highly symbolic. It is holding conservatism hostage and presenting a new idea, that “the monarchy should be abolished”. It was the rise of anarchy. Dan Brady (2017) Jamie Reid, famed for his iconoclastic approach in design as a self proclaimed anarchist, used a technique that is Collage’s rebellious cousin; Decollage; a process that involves tearing away at photos, in a messy protest that can create something gritty, and entirely new. His art helped define the aesthetic of the Punk movement and had a profound effect on society, with the Labour MP Marcus Lipton saying: “if pop music is going to be used to destroy our established institutions, then it ought to be destroyed first”. Artnet (N.D.) His designs were revolutionary, (literally), and “Jamie Reid’s artwork visually defined an era, frightened a government and changed the face of design – 30 years on he is just as influential and controversial. Few people have ever faced imprisonment in the name of graphic design. Jamie Reid is a notable exception.” Kenn Taylor (2010) Task 2 The contemporary influential graphic design example I have chosen is the Stabilo Boss campaign: Highlight the remarkable: “This professional campaign titled ‘Highlight the Remarkable – Lise, Highlight the Remarkable…’ was published in Germany in April, 2018. It was created for the brand: Stabilo Boss, by ad agency: DDB.” Adsoftheworld (N.D.) This was a campaign to advertise highlighter pens, and it depicts three minimalist posters that use a Swiss design, a single swipe of fluorescent yellow, simple photographs, whitespace, and type to literally highlight some of History’s most remarkable women, who were uncredited and overshadowed by their husbands and male co-workers. British Design and Art Direction states: “the yellow stroke of the Stabilo Boss highlights three women: NASA mathematician Katherine Johnson, US First Lady Edith Wilson and Austrian-Swedish physicist Lise Meitner. We don’t highlight them in texts, but in historic, black-and-white photos, where men are in forefront or center of the visual” D&AD (2017) It could be argued that the campaign uses virtue signaling to profit off of women’s achievements to sell pens; Or it could be regarded as a widely successful campaign that drew attention to women flying under the radar in History, as well as honoring them by giving them that moment in the spotlight which they so deserved, and didn’t get to have. Lise Meitner, discoverer of nuclear fission, whose male partner was awarded the nobel prize. Katherine Johnson, the Nasa mathematician responsible for the calculations resulting in Apollo 11’s safe return to earth. Edith Wilson, The First Lady who assumed her husband’s presidential responsibilities after he was paralyzed by a stroke. Task 3 In this collaborative workshop I worked with my classmate Kate to look at the tag line “more green time less screen time”, and used it to come up with our own campaign slogan called “Stroll Don’t Scroll, which is a campaign which intends to encourage positive social change through offering an alternative to scrolling on social media through dreamy visuals and the peaceful nostalgia of nature and time outside. Our demographic aims to target working individuals aged between 30-49, who spent a lot of time using computers in their daily life or jobs. The campaign will use visual mediums such as social media posters and videos woven into people’s for you pages on tiktok, instagram reels, and youtube shorts, to cause positive disruption at the source. This is with the aim to therefore change users’ perception of peace, without shaming and criticising, but instead romanticizing the positive alternative of spending time outside, playing on childhood nostalgia. We collaborated on a Figjam board, (which can be found embedded above). In this board, we collated our aims for our campaign, the slogan, our justifications, competitor research and statistical research, as well as our chosen demographic, and a stylized mood board for the tone and aesthetic of our campaign “Stroll Don’t Scroll”. Source Magazine (2018) R.S.P.H Campaign Poster. I did some competitor research and looked at the R.S.P.H’s Scroll Free September, which shows a poster using illustrative posters such as a smashed phone symbolising breaking free from being addicted to social media. This campaign encourages people to partake in a challenge which involves not scrolling on their phone through the month of September, similar to the concept of “Movember” which raises awareness for men’s health issues, and “Sober October” to raise funds for Mcmillan. Heineken (N.D) Social Off Socials. Rough Sketches We also did some rough sketches of potential ideas that could be used to create a logo for our campaign, and came up with some iconography which could be utilised later on, such as stairs to symbolise physical activity and walking, and Kate drew some logos using legs to replace the two letter “L’s”, as well as providing some potentially retro options to work with. My Sketches Kate’s Sketches We also had the idea to have a split poster showing contrasting imagery of stress vs nature, which lead to Kate creating a rough draft… Continue reading 001 Presentation Of Proposal
Portfolio/Production
Research and Project Timeline- Developing Work In this project i will: Apply research-driven idea generation to develop a production piece related to emerging technologies. Demonstrate effective project management skills in the creation of the production piece and the compilation of a portfolio. Showcase software proficiency by incorporating appropriate tools and techniques in the production process. Incorporate ethical values and principles in the production piece and portfolio. Exhibit forward-thinking by integrating emerging technology trends and concepts into the work. Week 1& 2 Inspirations, User Research, and Ethics 17/11/2025 My project is largely inspired by Bioluminescence. When talking about the natural phenomenon of Biolumienescence, it described a process where living things such as mushrooms and animals produce a glow, for example organisms in very deep parts of the sea exhibit this amazing glowing characteristic. Natural History Museum states: “The light that living creatures can produce is created by a chemical reaction. For this reaction to happen a plant or animal must carry a molecule called luciferin, plus one of two enzymes called luciferase and photoprotein. When luciferin chemically reacts with oxygen, it releases energy in the form of light..” K. Pavid (N.D.) They also state: “In this environment, the light some animals can create for themselves is fundamental to survival.” K. Pavid (N.D.) Engaging in art is a light we create for ourselves; In my project, I would like to create an experience which provides a space for art and joy. Blackreach My first inspiration is Blackreach, which is a large subterranean bioluminescent cavern beneath Skyrim. The environment is full of blue glowing giant mushrooms and strange plants. I wanted to incorporate elements of this into my project like glowing plants and mushrooms. I found that it is many people’s favourite place in Skyrim due to its aesthetic and its experience, as well as a user who stated: “I couldn’t help but feel fascinated with all the colours” And another user stated “Blackreach is one of the most amazing and innovative locations in all of gaming.” (Archius99 2020 r/Skyrim. Reddit.) In addition to this, someone stated the size of the map to be a huge problem: “It’s a beautiful place, but it’s massive. I think it’s what causes a lot of people to dislike it.” (OrangePoweraid 2020 r/Skyrim. Reddit.) Therefore I think the smaller size of my 360 environment could help with this pain point, while still keeping the colours and general theme. Biolum Another inspiration includes Biolum, a VR immersive underwater experience on Meta Quest. It features visuals such as glowing plants and animals, and lots of aqua blue colours which I thought would be captivating, as well as enhancing the aesthetic usability of my project. Flora Inspirations In Subnautica In addition to these examples, I am also inspired by all the different types of glowing and unusual alien flora found in the underwater game Subnautica, and would like to create some of my own alien plants for my VR experience, in blender. Cory Strader, the art director for Subnautica states on drawing inspiration for the assets in the game: “Some of the more basic flora has a closer relationship to actual earth vegetation, such as the grass, seaweed, and coral branch filler assets.” P.Warr (2017) In considering both these things, I think it will be useful to draw inspiration from the natural world, while still having the freedom to create something new and captivating that users will enjoy such as glowing ferns, improving the aesthetic usability effect. Racoon Lagoon One other competitor for this project is a VR game called Racoon Lagoon. I am inspired by, and love the ethereal and glowy nature of the landscape blended with fantasy. I also liked the stylized low poly style as this will be easier to render and a sensible way to execute my vision. One Reddit user states that “Racoon Lagoon is a wonderful cosy game”, They also state that Racoon Lagoon “has more vibrant colours and very nice to look at in general”. Gregasy (2024) It can be noted that a similar theme of users perceiving a higher Aesthetic Usability due to these vibrant looking visuals. Fuji Gardening Adventure During my research for other VR experiences with bioluminescence, I found a game called Fuji Gardening Experience. This is a game where you can play as a magical gardener in an ethereal world in space, and this inspired me that it could be fun for players to be in outer space for my VR experience. User Profile It can be seen from my user research in my first submission, that the demographic for this experience ranges from ages: 18-54 . Pain points include “massive maps being off putting” User wants include, “vibrant and fascinating colours”. Something nice to look at. Accessibility needs include, a safe experience, and an accessible experience, which can be accessed standing or sitting. Accessibility and Ethics Considerations One UX I proposed to use is Hick’s Law, which will utilise the small space of the environment to allow people to have this VR experience, without feeling lost, or overwhelmed with choice and the size of the space. This can help with those who are Neuro Divergent, as it can be extremely tough on the senses to put on a headset and enter a new environment. It is preferable that the environment be a small experience, making it more accessible. Medium also states “Staying too long in VR may cause social isolation or change how people see reality.” Using Hick’s Law to make a smaller and shorter experience will help with this ethical consideration, to give regular breaks to using VR headsets. Week 3- Mid Fidelity Sketches, Colours 1/12/2025 The colours I decided to use as a theme for my environment are based off of bioluminescence in the natural world, as well as the colours I enjoyed from my inspirations, such as the glowing aqua marine from Blackreach in Skyrim, and in Subnautica… Continue reading Portfolio/Production

Lab Exercises
Lab Exercises Prototyping The Immersive Experience What is Virtual Reality? “VR applications immerse the user in a computer-generated environment that simulates reality through the use of interactive devices, which send and receive information and are worn as goggles, headsets, gloves, or body suits.” Lowood, Henry E (2025) In this assignment, I will be writing about how certain softwares can be utilized using visual language such as light, colour and sound to create 360 environments. The Cell Fracture Exercise In Blender In lab session one, I set up a 360 environment in blender, and experimented with a plugin called cell fracture. I then applied it to a basic sphere mesh using geometry nodes to create an exploding particle effect. One of the features of cell fracture that could be used in a 360 VR environment is the control of the direction of the explosion, and depending on where the user is standing during the cell fracture, they could see different particle effects at different angles. Potentially this control of explosion shape could direct a user’s view to a specific object or direction to further the narrative of the experience. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-JWWjJ8AtYM A particular issue I overcame included the size and range of the explosion being contained to a really overt circular shape, which looked inorganic and not very immersive, and the unexpected result could trigger VR sickness. I had to adjust the settings of the ‘from max’ value on the map range module in geometry nodes, to expand the range of the cell fracture; this made the distribution of the exploding particles look more natural for the user. UX Design Institute states on replicating real life expectations: “According to Leon Zhang writing for UX Collective, spatial interaction design in the VR world is how the world really functions. In other words, users don’t need to learn to sit on a chair or grab a sword; they already know from experience. UX designers just have to replicate that experience” C Vinney (2023) Therefore more organic reactions in objects, (which will be expected due to real life heuristic expectations), could help prevent VR sickness from unexpected visuals that don’t corroborate with real world knowledge and experiences, as well as creating a strong feeling of presence in the user, as well as trust. I also experimented with sculpting a tree in blender for my project, as i wanted to have ago with making something in the 360 environment, as well as playing with naturistic lighting and camera movement. https://youtu.be/dUl28zZbyb0 Music Visualiser Exercise During this set exercise, I followed a tutorial on how to make a 3D music visualiser. This could be interesting used in a 360 VR environment as it shows responsiveness to the sound used in the environment, and something like this could be used to create a musical VR experience (for example like beat saber), which represents the music itself in a physical moving form, utilising things like colour and light, to create a unique and interesting VR experience. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Emr4loczAAI Seeing the music moving in this way could also help people enter a flow state: “The mental state in which a person performing some activity is fully immersed in a feeling of energized focus, full involvement, and enjoyment in the process of the activity.” J. Yablonski (2025) Flow Laws of UX When used in a musical experience, seeing the physical visualiser of the music in a 360 environment could engage users by having them enter a flow state, and gain interest through the use of colours that could change and even glow depending on the type of music being played. FrameVR. io In this session we were asked to create a concept and narrative using FrameVR.io’s online VR environment, to tell a story or evoke a feeling. This space allows designers to externally import assets such as 3D models and images, and gives access to a range of 3D models already included with the software. Range of 3D assets readily available to use in Frame VR.io as well as player view and character The Muder Mystery Idea I drew up a storyboard idea for a murder mystery, in which i wanted to use hierarchy and heuristics in the form of visual language such as light, and colour, in order to create an immersive story which invites users to engage problem solving skills, however i realised this would be impractical as just an “experience”, and would really require coding and interactivity to be functional, and decided to create some other story boards for an immersive glade/nature scene. New Concept An article by medium states that VR: “Provides a world that is enjoyable to see, live in and interact with while eliminating dangerous or extraneous features or entities that might negatively impact the user experience.” N Dauchot (2018) The concept is a 360 nature scene with flowers, trees, and lots of ethereal colours, with the goal of giving the user a beautiful experience that will make them feel awe and wonder, as well as allowing them to explore the scene, to provide fun, and allow the user to engage in escapism from daily life, in a way that is aesthetically pleasing. Storyboards The plan was to have the user will start in the middle of a medium 360 environment, which encourages them to look around in all directions, and view the sky from a view point, giving an otherworldly, ethereal pretty nature experience; my concept, albeit crudely executed at this point in time, is inspired by the game “Fuji VR Gardening Experience”, a game which is based on another planet, rich in colour and unusual flora. B Lang. (2019) Fuji Review Fuji VR Gardening showing bright colours and ethereal beauty. B Lang. (2019) My Scene https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UEbhN4rIkPQ The prettiness of the environment could help to engage users more efficiently due to the design law “Aesthetic-Usability Effect” (Kurosu and Kashimura), making the person want to spend more time exploring the 360 environment because of its… Continue reading Lab Exercises

2D Animation Web Based Infographic The venue I came up with for this assignment, is a five story Parisian building called Macaron Emporium; it is a Hotel, Spa, Cafe, and has a Dessert Buffet. Story Board And What I Learned The storyboard shows my ideas for the video, (the Parisian Building with popups) , but i realised i needed a hook to engage people, which is why i decided to ask relevant and humorous questions at the beginning, with fast moving visuals so as to keep people’s attention, and create a problem that needs solving, which is answered by the informative interactive section. During this exercise I learned how to delay a symbols start point on the timeline for controlled animation, how to pause a symbol before leaving the scene, and how to program buttons to trigger animations for popups, in addition to using the movie feature to have an isolated isolation within the scene. Logo It can be seen that the logo also adheres to the pastel colour palette and mimics the roof sign on top of the building, with a bright background so that it has some contrast, making the typography visible. These colours will also be used across all branding for the Hotel. Demographic The target demographic for this venue are women of all ages because it is a Macaron Hotel and Spa, which according to a study by Good Spa Guide, 8,827 (90%) of their spa users are women, with the age range being mostly divided over ages ranging 20-60, (GoodSpaGuide 2023). Colour And Style The colour palette I have chosen is the “Kawaii fashion” pastel colours, and the colours and shapes are commonly associated with Macarons. An article by Rock & Art states that pastels are a “timeless refuge, offering a sense of stability and harmony” as well as stating “pastel hues remind us that simplicity and serenity can be enduring.”, (Shristi Sahoo. Rock & Art 2023), which is ideal for a calming Spa and Hotel environment, and also pays homage to kawaii fashion. The Animation https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4TrCoMsXc30 Please see above my completed 2D animation video for the Macaron Emporium; the process included designing all of the assets in adobe illustrator, including the Parisian building, of which i used a reference image to trace the shapes, and then importing them to stage, and making each item a symbol, before animating them, and incorporating interactive button elements, which allow the user to experience a sense of gamification and inclusion, by displaying colourful buttons on the building; these buttons then bring up pop up information encased in aesthetically pleasing macaron shapes. The buttons used the coding feature in adobe animate, in order to associate the values of the buttons, with the information pop ups, and triggering the interactive animation. Blender Modelling Can First Design Here you can see my first designs for the can i modeled and uv unwrapped. I created the wrapping print in illustrator, and then imported the image texture onto the can net shape in the uv unwrapping workspace of blender, which allowed me to project my design onto the can, before sizing it appropriately. Due to my research earlier on what sells well in giftshops, one of the responses stated that consumables, and drinks do particularly well, and with the establishment having a heavy focus on sweets, i decided to design a branded drinks can, in pistachio matcha, macaron milk tea flavour, which adheres to the brand typography, colour scheme, and iconography. Glass First Design Next i modelled a standard shaped glass/beaker cup, and wanted it to look like it had a printed design on it, however i ran into quite a few complications with this design; first, it was difficult to get the design on top of a translucent glass texture, of which i had to do using complicated nodes in the shader panel, as well as using the uv unwrapped to get the net shape of the cup, and project the repeat pattern i designed in illustrator onto the cup. I also found that after this, the top of the cup looked slightly distorted, perhaps due to the lighting of the HDRI that I used, and so later on I decided to improve the texture by using a different print design over the glass. Mug First Design I designed a pattern for a mug that includes a repeat print of macarons in different colours in illustrator, before using the uv unwrapping workspace to project the pattern onto the mug. However at this stage, the mug has the pattern printed inside it, and it did not have any further textural details such as the shine that a ceramic mug should have, as I intended to use this to improve the texture further for the next section. I modelled the mug from a cylinder, and bridged four faces on the side, which allowed me to create the shape of the handle; after this i added a subdivision modifier to create more geometry for the uv unwrapping to wrap to, as well as shading smooth to create a smooth surface. I had attempted to use the lathe tool to create a handle, however I do not yet have the skills to understand how to troubleshoot this tool, and so I overcame this by shaping the handle from the faces of the mug. Notebook First Design I also wanted to add something to the gift shop that would be an appropriate item for the younger age bracket of the hotel and spa, and so decided that a notebook was a practical item that would be enticing to a younger demographic of 18 and upwards, for use at college or university, as well as being a pretty, yet functional, memorabilia. I used face select after modeling to create the uv unwrapping, and added a decal that I designed in adobe illustrator. I wanted the book to have a texture like vegan leather, and chose to improve upon this further in the next… Continue reading Practical Exercises
Class Work
Project Three
eDecks Live Design Group Project In this assignment we were assigned groups from the class, which were then paired with groups from the business school, and our task was to meet with the company eDecks to re-design several different facets of their brand, to help increase the gap in winter sales, including their website and social media videos,as well as physical visuals such as van design, billboards, and posters; I will be discussing several aspects of this assignment, including the subject, audience and purpose of the design materials, in addition to relevant design history and inspirations, the project’s development over time, and examples of our teamwork. Due to the nature of the assignment, I will also be discussing some of the shortcomings we experienced and what we learned from this design challenge. Subject, Audience, Purpose The subject of our group’s task was to redesign the eDecks website, which would include banner advertisements and offers on their homepage, the hero layout and button organisation, and the utilization of colour as a call to action element through hierarchy, as well as some other advertisements in the form of posters and videos for social media, at the request of the business group; However some of these were not fulfilled such as the videos due to the incongruent relationship and work ethic of the business group, whereby we were asked to create materials which where not achievable, or with incomplete marketing ideas that didn’t pertain to the winter sales goal, and with little to no notice. The brief states that the audience for this project are homeowners and first time home buyers, from the ages of 28 upwards, however according to Mojo Mortgages through the analysis of their internal datastating “The national average age of a first-time buyer in the UK is 33 years, 8 months.” (Aidan Darrall (2024) Mojo). Other target audiences include hobbyists, gardeners, builders and tradespeople, as well as small scale landscapers. In terms of audience and how their budget is likely to dictate purchasing decisions, Mojo also states that “This milestone age reflects the increasing difficulties young adults face in saving for a home. Furthermore, a recent report by Lloyds Banking revealed that in 2023, the average deposit for first-time buyers was a hefty £53,414, with the average mortgage amounting to £234,722.” Which means that the eDecks marketing campaign and website’s unique point of sale will need to focus on the reasonable pricing they can offer across all of their customer base. The purpose of this design brief is to redesign the Edecks website homepage layout, so that it is more accessible (easier to read, and navigate), through the organisation of content such as buttons, and how product categories are organised, as well as better banner advertisements to highlight potential offers on products, and the use of colour to establish a visual hierarchy, as well as to highlight key features without being overwhelming and confusing; Also in doing so, applying Jajob’s Design Law, with an NN Group article stating “Jakob’s Law of the Web User Experience states that “users spend most of their time on other websites.” This means that they form their expectations for your site based on what’s commonly done on most other sites. If you deviate, your site will be harder to use and users will leave.” (Jakob Nielsen (2011) NN Group) All of which is important because the goal of the redesign is to get homeowners to want to purchase products from the website, and in order to do so, they need to be able to comfortably and confidently navigate the website, to find what they came for, and with the best case scenario of them purchasing something they didn’t come for, through the use of offers and advertising visuals. According to Laws of UX about Hick’s Law: “the more stimuli to choose from, the longer it takes the user to make a decision on which one to interact with. Users bombarded with choices have to take time to interpret and decide, giving them work they don’t want.” (LawsofUX (N.D.) Hick’s Law Laws of UX) Following Hick’s Law can prevent users from being overwhelmed with options, and immediately leaving the website before they have even begun browsing.
